Building a maritime-specialized AI Agent platform that uses AI to analyze a vessel's "lifetime data," feeding it back into new-ship design and improving on-site productivity

Mukaishima Dock Co., Ltd. (HQ: Onomichi, Hiroshima; President: Tomohiro Kuno; "Mukaishima Dock") and Noahlogy Inc. Background: A crisis in the "physical sustainability" of coastal shipping

Coastal shipping physically underpins Japan's domestic logistics and national security, yet it now faces a serious crisis. As crews and engineers age, work-style reforms take hold, and the vessels themselves grow older, maintaining current transport capacity will require not only fundamental productivity gains but also the creation of an ecosystem spanning the entire maritime industry cycle, coastal shipping included.

Focusing on the data advantage held by "repair docks," the two companies have begun co-creating a data-driven ship-repair model that starts from on-site data.

Why "repair data"?

Data held by new-shipyards and equipment makers is often limited to the pre-delivery period or to their own products, leaving a shortage of long-term post-operation data.

Repair docks, by contrast, accumulate more than a decade of "full-lifetime track-record data" — from a vessel's construction to its scrapping — including where failures tend to occur and how to extend service life. Much of this information, however, has been scattered as unstructured data: paper records, handwritten figures, the intuition and experience of veteran workers, and everyday conversation — and has not been fully utilized.

Overview: Building a circular ecosystem with AI

By combining Mukaishima Dock's vast on-site expertise with Noahlogy's AI technologies (computer vision, natural language processing, robotics, and more), the collaboration aims to achieve the following:

  1. Digitizing on-site data and visualizing "true track-record values"

    By linking a "fleet management system" (electronic engine logs, onboard maintenance records, labor-management records, etc.) with a "repair-planning system" (electronic specifications, process charts, technical and skill information, etc.), we structure and accumulate a vessel's lifetime data. Combining these with the "FACT" data obtained through the repair-dock sequence of opening up, measuring, servicing, and restoring, we build an integrated analysis platform that enables predictive maintenance.

  2. Feedback into new-ship design (front-loading)

    By analyzing accumulated repair and failure data, we develop an AI advisory function that can propose to shipyards and shipowners "specifications that lower maintenance costs" and "designs that reduce equipment trouble and crew workload." This contributes to the supply of high-quality new ships that are durable and low-maintenance.

  3. Cultivating a "self-driving on-site DX team"

    Beyond simply introducing tools, Noahlogy works alongside the team from on-site interviews through AI-model construction to operational settlement. We promote talent development and organizational building so that on-site engineers can leverage data and improve their own operations.

Future outlook: Toward a maritime-specialized AI Agent platform

Through this initiative, Mukaishima Dock and Noahlogy aim to build a "maritime-specialized AI Agent platform" that connects the entire vessel lifecycle with data — from development and design to construction, operation, repair, and sale. The platform will integrate and analyze not only on-site track-record data but also external information such as maritime news, newspaper articles, and the latest classification-society rules and safety standards.

By establishing a foundation on which crews, shipowners, shipyards, manufacturers, and repair operators can synchronize and collaborate, we will contribute to sustaining and advancing coastal shipping and logistics.
